Brick Slip Installation Methods

Brick slips and brick cladding can be fitted and installed in a variety of ways. As brick slips are thin versions of traditional brickwork, they are generally fixed to the substrate by means of adhesive rather than traditional mortar. However some brick slip suppliers have introduced mechanical and panel type systems in place to make the installation of brick cladding much easier and quicker than the standard method. These brick slip installation methods are detailed below.
1. Basic Brick Slip Installation

For relatively small projects such as fire places or plinths, brick slips can be bought individually or in packs. The easiest method for installation is the use of a suitable brick cladding adhesive. As with traditional brickwork, the end of the brickwork is built up first and string lines banded across to provide a straight edge for the top of the bricks to measure to. Brick slips can be cut or staggered depending on the pattern of the brickwork to give the correct bonding.
With the brick slips fixed and dried with adhesive, the joints can be pointed. The pointing mortar is generally supplied from the brick slip supplier and when mixed can be applied into the gaps with a catridge gun or similar method. Pointing of the brick slips is completed with finishing the joints be removing the excess mortar.

2. Insulated Brick Slip Panels

Various manufacturers of brick cladding also provide insulated panels on which to attach the brick slips. These panels provide a profiled brick course and joint, giving the installer a quick, easy and accurate method in which to install the brick slips. The panels are initially attached to the substrate, these fixing methods depend on the material attached to and the type of project the brick cladding is being used for.
Fitting of the brick slips would begin with the corner bricks or "pistols" and a calculation taken to find out the number of bricks between the corners and the size of the mortar joint required. The 10mm vertical joint is taken by the profile board which makes installation of the brick slips so much easier and quicker. Brick slips can be cut with a tile cutter or manually to provide the correct spacing of the brick slips. The brick slip adhesive should be allowed to dry fully before begining the pointing.
Special pointing mortar is applied with a gun or cartridge and the excess removed, then cleaned by brushing the face of the brick slips.

3. Mechanical Brick Cladding

Another method of fixing brick cladding or slips is by mechanical technique. Such a method is used by Banbury Innovations. Their brikloc system provides a mechanical and mortar fix which can used on any substrate. This mechanical method works by locking the brick slips in place and aligning the bricks preventng them from becoming loose or falling of. This mechanical brick cladding system is very lightweight once installed and can be used with standard brick slips. With the unique fixing method it is very quick to install, saving time and money on costly labour and site time.
